Kunshan Contemporary Kunqu Opera Company, the newest Kunqu Opera theater in China announced that 55 masters from all over the country will deliver a grand performance to celebrate the 2-year anniversary of the company’s founding.
As the cradle of Kunqu Opera with over 600-year history, city of Kunshan will gather 55 Kunqun master representatives from 8 professional theaters all over the country in October to perform the famous drama “The Peony Pavilion”. The Peony Pavilion is a play written by Tang Xianzu in the Ming Dynasty and first performed in 1598, which centers around two lovers, the maid Du Liniang and young scholar Liu Mengmei. Du meets Liu in a dream and falls passionately in love with him. Upon waking and realizing the romance is not real, her health deteriorates rapidly and she dies of a broken heart. However, the overlords of the underworld deem she and Liu are destined to be together, and allow for her resurrection, which is performed by Liu himself. Performed as Kunqu Opera, a 500 year old artform which is known as the mother of Chinese Opera, the story is dubbed the 'Chinese Romeo and Juliet' - a timeless tale of love which has been enjoyed by generations.
